Head pressure represents the height to which a pump can lift a fluid, and several slurry applications demand a lot of it:

Where Single-Stage Pumps Run Out
A single impeller limits how much energy a pump can impart to the slurry. Pushing a single-stage pump beyond its designed pressure range causes predictable damage:
- Reduced efficiency: the pump struggles toward the duty point, consuming more energy for less flow.
- Accelerated wear: operating under strain wears the impeller, casing, and seals early, bringing downtime with it.
- Process upsets: insufficient pressure disrupts downstream equipment, starting with the filter press cake quality.
The Multi-Stage Answer
Pemo's double and triple stage pumps place multiple impellers in series, each stage boosting the slurry's pressure progressively. The first impeller draws slurry in and imparts the initial energy; the second takes the pressurized flow and raises it further; a third stage, where fitted, raises it again. The same principle drives multistage clean-water pumps, but building it for abrasive slurry is a different engineering problem, and it is Pemo's specialty.
